The Revolutionary Bone Repair Technique

ILIZAROV

Ilizarov is a bone repair technique that involves the use of an external fixator to promote bone healing. Developed by Russian surgeon Gavriil Abramovich Ilizarov in the 1950s, it has since been used to treat a wide range of bone and limb injuries.

A Brilliant Mind

Gavriil Abramovich Ilizarov was born in 1921 and grew up in Siberia. Fascinated by medicine from a young age, he went on to study at medical school in Kurgan.

A Revolutionary Idea

Ilizarov began to experiment with external fixators and discovered that they could not only stabilize fractures, but also stimulate bone growth. His ground-breaking research and innovative techniques paved the way for modern orthopedic surgery.

A Legacy of Healing

Today, Ilizarov’s technique is used all over the world to treat complex fractures, limb length discrepancies, and bone infections. This technique is still considered one of the most effective and innovative treatments for bone injuries and diseases.

How Ilizarov Works

External Fixators

Ilizarov technique uses an external fixator, a metal frame that attaches to the injured limb with wires or pins. This helps to stabilize the bones and joints, while allowing for controlled movement and compression.

Osteogenesis

The fixator puts pressure on the bone and stimulates the body’s natural healing process, allowing new bone to grow and regenerate at the site of the injury. This process is called osteogenesis and promotes the formation of new bone tissue.

Gradual Correction

Ilizarov can also be used to correct limb deformities and length discrepancies. The external fixator enables gradual bone lengthening, which the body adjusts to over time. This process can take several months or years, depending on the patient’s progress.

Minimal Invasion

The Ilizarov technique is minimally invasive, making it an ideal option for patients who are not candidates for traditional surgery. It also presents fewer risks and complications, compared to other surgical methods.

Conditions Treated by Ilizarov

Polytrauma can result in a wide range of symptoms and impairments, which can include:

Traumatic Injuries

Ilizarov is commonly used to treat traumatic injuries caused by accidents, falls, and sports-related incidents. It can effectively stabilize and repair fractures, dislocations, and ligament injuries.

Bone Infections

Ilizarov can also treat bone infections, including osteomyelitis. The fixator helps to promote blood flow and oxygen to the affected area, which aids in the healing process and reduces the risk of complications.

Deformities

Ilizarov can correct limb deformities, such as bowing, length discrepancies, and malalignment. The frame can gradually stretch or compress the bone to achieve the desired alignment and contour.

Nonunion

Ilizarov can treat nonunion, where a fractured bone fails to heal properly. The frame can stimulate bone growth and encourage the growth of new blood vessels, which helps to promote healing.

Benefits and Risks of Ilizarov

  1. Efficiency
Ilizarov can treat complicated bone injuries in shorter periods than traditional methods, thanks to its ability to stimulate bone healing and growth.
  2. Minimal Scarring
Ilizarov requires only small incisions and does not involve cutting through muscle and soft tissue, like traditional surgery. This results in minimal scarring and blood loss.
  3. Risks of Infection
Like with any surgical procedure, there is always a risk of infection, especially when using external fixators. Patients may require antibiotics and careful monitoring of their condition.
  4. Discomfort
Ilizarov can be uncomfortable, and patients may need to deal with pins and wires protruding out of their skin. However, this discomfort is managed with pain medication and care.
